No H8

I have been wanting to create a piece on the whole gay marriage struggle since the inception of Prop 8. I watched the two sides vehemently argue their points and with sadness and frustration I watched it pass. In my opinion Proposition 8 took something historic and meaningful and changed it to purposely reflect a discriminatory point by disallowing gays to legally marry in the state of California. The new section, 7.5 Article 1, now reads: "Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in the California."

My only question is why? Why does it matter to you? Why is it that you are letting a book or a supposed God dictate who can have equal rights? Aren't we all God's little children? Why the separation and discrimination? I have a lot of thoughts, opinions, and absolute frustration over the matter and am finally getting those emotions to canvas. If anything, it will be a very cathartic process.

We Are the World

I have been asked to create a piece for the ART + Advocacy Auction that benefits the Dallas Children's Advocacy Center. The mission of DCAC is to improve the lives of abused children in Dallas County and provide national leadership on child abuse issues. So, while thinking through ideas that would translate the message of DCAC I kept coming back to We Are the World perhaps due to all the Michael Jackson media coverage lately.

After watching the video since my last listen many years ago I found the lyrics and the range of artists performing in the piece quite impressive and amazing. It was like a walk down memory lane. All those artists from the 80's I remember so fondly, and posthumously to hear the genius of Michael Jackson was quite remarkable.

The core of the lyrics suit the mission of DCAC and will provide a beautifully, textured background to the artwork. From there on out it's an organic process before the final layer is applied.

We are the world
We are the children
We are the ones who make a brighter day
So let's start giving
There's a choice we're making
We're saving our own lives
It's true we'll make a better day
Just you and me

The Answers in the Land

I've been thinking about land. Landscapes. Seascapes. Urbanscapes. Mountain Ranges. Rivers. My travels the past few months have taken me from the north to the south and everyone I look I'm finding inspiration. There is wondrous inspiration everywhere I turn with a beautiful range of color and texture that occur so naturally. Organically translating those qualities into my work had been put to paper in my notebook of ideas, and then I saw this beautiful photo taken by a friend in Michigan. It exemplifies all possibilities for a creative breakthrough that surround us daily. Just open your eyes and see the plausibility of a new perspective.
